In 2021, a disturbing case of apparent autoerotic asphyxiation came to light when a 26-year-old man was discovered dead by his mother. The alarm was raised after she noticed a scarf hanging out from under the apartment door. Inside, authorities found the man had hanged himself using a makeshift ligature composed of a bath towel and a terry cloth scarf, tightly secured with a single knot.
The body, found partially clothed, displayed intense lividity across the front, with a bluish hue clearly visible. A protruding tongue and fluid secretion around the genitals, suspected to be semen, were also observed. A powered-on computer nearby displayed pornographic content, suggesting the act may have been sexually motivated. No suicide note was found, and family members reported no known history of mental illness.
