Brutal Killing of Avá Guarani Indigenous Man in Land Dispute in Western Paraná

A tragic incident occurred on March 22, 2025, when the body of a young Avá Guarani indigenous man named Marcelo Ortiz, also known as Ku’i, was discovered decapitated near the airport in Guaíra, Paraná, Brazil. His body was left in the nearby vegetation, while his head was shockingly placed on a castor branch stake. This gruesome event happened in the Tekoha Jevy village within the Guasu Guavirá Indigenous Land, amidst rising tensions over land conflicts in Western Paraná. The authorities, including the Federal Police, National Force, and Civil Police, are conducting an investigation, although the perpetrators and their motives are still unknown. This appalling act comes after a series of armed assaults and intimidations against the Avá Guarani, who have been striving to regain their traditional land since July 2024.
