Debunking Claims of TNI Soldier Deaths in Yahukimo Regency
A recent incident in Yahukimo Regency, Papua Pegunungan, involved the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) clarifying misinformation spread by the Armed Criminal Group (KKB) regarding the alleged killing of 11 TNI soldiers. The TNI refuted these claims by revealing that the 11 individuals were actually gold miners and not military personnel as falsely reported. The misleading information originated from the West Papua National Liberation Army-Free Papua Organization (TPNPB-OPM), which accused the deceased Yahukimo residents of being Indonesian intelligence agents.
Brigadier General Kristomei Sianturi, the Head of Information Center at TNI, discredited the hoax during an interview on April 9, 2025. He highlighted that such deceptive tactics are commonly employed by the KKB to spread propaganda. General Sianturi emphasized that soldiers’ identities are meticulously documented, making it evident that the 11 victims were not part of the military.
This incident underscores the persistent tensions in the region, where separatist groups like the KKB and TPNPB-OPM frequently engage in conflicts with Indonesian authorities. The TNI warned that these false narratives are part of a larger scheme to deceive the public and escalate the ongoing conflict.
