Report on the Aftermath: 17 Inmates Brutally Killed in Prison Uprising in Ecuador
During a violent prison riot in Guayaquil, Ecuador, at least 17 prisoners were brutally murdered. The aftermath of the riot revealed a grim scene within the prison, with lifeless bodies strewn across the floor, many of whom had been decapitated, throat slit, or stabbed.
The prison in question, designed for 5,000 inmates, currently holds 10,000 prisoners, highlighting severe overcrowding issues. Tragically, this is not the first incident of bloodshed within the prison walls, as a previous massacre in 2021 resulted in the loss of 119 lives. Ecuador’s prisons have gained notoriety for being among the most perilous in Latin America due to overcrowding, corruption, and inadequate state oversight, creating an environment conducive to the operations of drug cartel-affiliated gangs from Colombia and Mexico.
